The plays in this series are so great--funny, easy to follow, engaging! The first one I purchased was "Twelfth Night," and it convinced me to get more. It is delightful! Any kid would enjoy performing it, as intended, or even just reading it on his/her own.
Perfect for use in the classroom, and the children love it. It's a wonderful way to introduce Shakespeare to young children. I have bought the others in the series for my classroom as well.
It's a nice effort, but kids aren't idiots. They can "get" most of Shakespeare without the serious watering down in this version. And I mean kids as young as 6. I know this because I adapt Shakespeare into musicals for kids as young as six and I keep far more of the original text. What's the point of teaching Shakespeare if you don't use as much of his amazing writing as possible? I couldn't get past a few pages of this before giving up on it. If you want fluff, buy this. If you want to actually teach children the beauty of Shakespeare, keep looking.
These are a great way in introduce Shakespeare to kids. They are quite fun for scene work in a drama classroom.
I've been working on 12th Night For Kids with my 2nd and 3rd graders. We all love it! Even kids who have hung back all year jump in and participate because these scripts are so much fun -- as much fun as the Shakespeare original!
I have been using Brendon Kelso's, Shakespeare for Kids Books for several years in my sixth grade reading classes. My students LOVE these plays!
I introduce each story by reading the children's version written in the book, Shakespeare Stories for Young Readers by Edith Nesbit. Then I select a couple of YouTube summaries of the play that have been posted by high school students and are usually quite funny. When students have a basic understanding of the play's story, they are given Brendan's scripts to act out. They have a ball! Character parts are picked randomly by drawing character names out of a bag. Then a two minute "switch time” is provided for students to trade character parts with other students. (However, more often than not male students TRY to get female parts.) By acting out the plays true collaborative learning occurs, they get a real understanding of the stories, and they have a great time! Moreover, state standards are met when collaborative groups eagerly learn to create plot structure diagrams, character analysis charts, themes, etc.
You don’t have to be an expert on Shakespeare’s work in order to teach it, and your students will always remember the great time they had learning Shakespeare in your class!
Here it is. The best way to introduce Shakespeare to kids! If you are a teacher, an after school programs director or a parent with a lot of time on your hands, you owe it to your students to buy this book. I promise, you will not be sorry.

Brendon has come up with an innovated and truly engaging way for students to have fun while learning the basics of Shakespeare. This book series is a must if we are going to keep the arts alive. Educators are always complaining that it is hard to get kids interested in the classics.

Brandon has found away to engage kids of all ages. Within the pages of these books (there are 11 so far) you will find the key to getting kids excited about Shakespeare. Each book contains three variations on the play. The three plays are broken down by age appropriate learning; 6-7 8-14 & 14-20. The plays run under 30 minutes, designed to introduce the basic plot. As the play’s age level progress, so do the plot details. Brendon has included many of Shakespeare’s more famous lines, while keeping the script simple and direct. I cannot image a more engaging and entertaining way to introduce Shakespeare to kids.
